Lovely Latin

We've started up our Latin studies this year with a new addition to our materials.  Lingua Angelica by Cheryl Lowe is an exquisite program based mainly on listening to Latin Hymns and then working through the translations by parsing.  Sounds fairly heavy but in reality it's quite simple and lovely to learn Latin in such a manner!  We chose to go with the whole program which includes the Teacher & Student Manuals, Songbook and CD (I, however, purchased my set from Memoria Press).  It is captivating and so far has caught the attention of dear Violet who sort of plowed unjoyously through Prima Latina last year (We're actually still finishing the last few lessons)  I will say that she has a little better interest in it now that we're adding Lingua Angelica to it for variety and for the music!

As one who wasn't required to take ANY Latin in school, I really enjoy the gentleness of how Prima is presented as it's very basic but disciplined, and Lingua is a beautiful compliment to it as a combination approach!  Matthias is beginning his turn at Prima this year and I think the implementation of the Hymns and Songbook from which he'll learn to play all the pieces on the piano will be of huge benefit to him!  It'll be a nice review for Violet as well as she walks through the lessons again with Matthias.

Good for you Meredith with your Latin. I think Cheryl Lowe does a fine job. We are already in Fr. Henle's Latin - second year for my oldest son now. I remember those beginning days! We used a lot of Rummy Roots games in those days.

Meredith, I've read your site for a while now, but I think this is my first comment (question). I hadn't given much thought to beginning Latin studies but we do study the proper names of plants and animals. My daughter seems fascinated with it and I was wondering what age to begin - and then I say your post today - any other tips? When did you start?
