We'll be "Owling" in the Preschool Learning Corner for the Month of January!! There will be lots of fun books, activities, and things to learn and discover through Seamus's eyes this month with two special Field Trips planned for observation and hands on learning about these magnificant nocturnal birds of prey!
Two years ago, we did a fun lapbook project based on the wonderful FIAR Volume 2 picture book, OWL MOON, by Jane Yolen and the fabulous Owling Unit at MacBeth's Opinion that is so beautifully laid out "Owling in the Woods". And now I've compiled my own OWLING FUN Download lesson_plans_owl_moon_2007.doc geared towards the Pre-K crowd!! So come along with us for some Hootin' good books and activities in the Preschool Learning Corner, there's sure to be something for the older students too if you want to combine the whole family! Besides, they can help you with the littlest owls too! (Please visit my left-hand side bar for other fun Preschool Learning: Tigers, Firetrucks and Squirrels)
Here's a booklist that we're working from, but there are so many more:
- Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
- Owl Lake by Tejima
- Owl Babies by Martin Waddell
- All About Owls by Jim Arnosky
- Poppy by Avi
- There's An Owl in the Shower by Jean Craighead George
- Egg to Bird (Cycles of Life) by Carolyn Scrace
- Owls (Zoobooks)
- One Small Square: Woods by Donald M. Silver
- One Man's Owl by Bernd Heinrich
- Owl in the House also by Bernd Heinrich
Let me know if you have any favorite Owl Books, also in the lesson plans there are references to other supplemental books for Science too!!
Hope you have fun with this one and May God Bless you in your day!!

Meredith! My 7yo just said to me yesterday ... "Mama, can we just learn all about owls in our homeschool today?" Now I know where to start! Thanks so much, my friend!

We just read Owl Moon yesterday, and the girls loved it. I think we'll do this right along with you for the month of January/Feb. Thansk for posting everything! I'll be requesting the books from the lib tonight.

We rowed Owl Moon 2 years ago and I think it was one of our most memorable weeks. We dissected the owl pellet that came in the book Owl Puke, we ate tasty owl pellets from a recipe on the FIAR boards and we took a walk at night with a large owl puppet, pretending we were owling. I'll come back to your ideas when we're ready to do it again. I want to thank you for posting your 1st communion notebook pics. It has given me great ideas for the one we're working on.

Meredith- this looks like so much fun - yes a "hoot". I know how much you enjoyed the study you did before so this should be fun for all. I posted a review of our study from last year http://skimac.wordpress.com/2006/11/30/in-the-year-of-the-owl/ - alot of the same books but a few different and some great websites if you haven't seen those. We would love to do the Bird Observatory field trip there by the reservoir (forest owls) - maybe we could do that with you guys some time in the future.

This sounds like such fun Meredith! Thank you for posting all the ideas and plans. We have a nature center nearby that takes in injured owls (those that could no longer survive in the wild). If I couple your great plans with a trip to see the owls, we could have a wonderful time! Thanks! Love, Rebecca

Thank you for sharing this, Meredith. I get so caught up with the girl's work that my 5yold loses out. Last night I remembered this post of yours and that I actually have Owl Moon. We're off owling now. Thanks again!
