A HOOT OF A TIME Owls Lapbook!

We certainly had a HOOT OF A TIME learning about Owls in the Preschool Learning Corner with many of our favorite Owl Books, the first and foremost being OWL MOON, by Jane Yolen, it is truly enchanting with superior illustrations.  That said, let me speak no further and show you our Lapbook that was the result of our learning together!

(Front Cover:  Sawhet Owl, printing by Seamus himself)

 

(Open:  Center is a Narration Seamus gave me and a drawing of the owl in Owl Moon)

 

(Center Page turned over:  Owl Moon forest watercolor)

 

( Center of Lapbook:  Color Copies of Seamus's 2nd favorite Owl book, Owl Lake, by Tejima.  He chose the picture of the father owl catching a trout for dinner.  Very cool woodcut illustrations in this picture book!) (Below:  Seamus's Phases of the Moon book.  He colored each of the eight panels of Phases with a light yellow colored pencil from New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent).

(Left panel:  Six Laminated Owl Life Cycle Matching Cards following our book Egg to Bird (Cycle of Life by Carolyn Scrace)

 

(Right panel:  The Matching Pairs w/out Word Clues)

 

(Lapbook Back:  Poem from Animals Animals by Eric Carle that Seamus memorized! His moon drawing)

 

(Back panel opens in a tri-fold, life-size color copy of a Great Horned Owl from the picture book, All About Owls, by Jim Arnosky, labeled by Seamus)

 

(Loose item:  Owl Lacing card, Seamus colored this from his favorite Alex Coloring book, we laminated it and punched holes for a lacing card!)

 

This was such an enjoyable Unit for all of us.  Owls are probably our most favorite and mysterious bird of prey to study and we will no doubt return to another study again next year!  Let us know what you think about all our work!
