(Repost from Sept. 2007. Botany is near and dear to our heart. We especially love all the hands-on Montessori Materials available for making the study of Botany truly enjoyable and meaningful for many ages! Thanks for checking in with us again, we're gearing up to start formal studies next week, so stay tuned for more posts from the past that have enriched our home school.)
Our learning has once again been enriched and inspired by the ever-creative and ingenious Theresa at LaPaz Home Learning! Following her lead, I made up some Botany Workmats and Control Cards that she recently shared to go along with our beautiful Botany Puzzles Cabinet that my dear children absolutely LOVE!! (thank you Alison's Montessori for another great product)!!
Here is an example of the Flower Puzzle on the Control Card that I traced, labled and laminated. And below is the Parts of a Seed Puzzle that I will introduce this week!! The kids are really enjoying learning about Botany in this very simplistic yet intuitive manner! Chalk another one up for Montessori learning!!
We have also been learning all the different names of the Shapes of Leaves and their Scientific Origins through work with the North American Leaf Cabinet (wehave one similar to this one linked)!
We've done a little tracing but mostly been outside trying to match leaves from our trees!!
We LOVE all of our Three-Part Card Materials from Montessori for Everyone! They have made our Botany lessons very precise!
I was also overjoyed to discover this lovely and playful Picture Book by Lois Elhert at our library recently!! It's a keeper for sure, and a wonderful addition to our Botany Discovery Center!
I hope you'll let us know how you like to Discover Botany and learn about Nature in God's beautiful Kingdom!! Blessings in your day!

We just got that book, too! The little ones love it.

Now THAT would make an awesome craft... make a leaf man from the falling leaves. If you mixed that with the Waldorf style nature table and fairy creatures (like at Katherine's blog), you could have some serious autumn craftiness :)

I NEVER had the opportunity to learn like this! I am feeling VERY deprived!! I guess I will just have to be satisfied watching your little ones have ALL THE FUN while they are in the process of learning! How blest are they?!!!
