On the Wings of Heroes by Richard Peck Notes :: This book is about a boy named Davy Bowman in the time of world war II. His brother Bill had just finished flight school and was going to fly a bomber on 25 missions. On one of the bombing raids, Bills plane went down and he was lost in action. His parents, grandparents and Davy were very worried. Davy's grandparents came to live with them and encouraged Davy's mom to get a job so she wouldn't be waiting anxiously for news of Bill. Davy continued his daily activities and going to school. Towards the end of the book, one night while the family slept, Davy's grandfather's root beer cans exploded and woke the family. The boy (who is named Bruno) decides to go exploring one day when he meets a boy(who is named Shmuel) who is sitting on the other side of the fence of the concentration camp. The two boys become friends but are always on different sides of the fence. When Bruno's mother decides to move back to Berlin, and the other boy's father goes missing, Bruno decides to come on the other side of the fence and help his friend find his missing father.
