Non-Fiction Monday :: Art Treasury

 

I can't believe two weeks have passed and we've not done a Non-Fiction Monday post!  Well, here we are back again with a fun book for today.  The Usborne Art Treasury by Rosie Dickins.  It's delightfully colorful and full of very fun and doable art-at-home projects for all ages. There's an especially fun section on collage painting or "drawing with scissors" modeled after the works of Henri Matisse! We also really like the swirly pages dedicated to Van Godh and his "Starry Nights" work.  This one will be a keeper for a while :)

Non-Fiction Monday :: Graphing in the Desert

 

Wow, it's Monday again, so here we go with another delightful Non-Fiction Monday selection!

We're working on graphing for Math this week, so this was a nice choice for the younger set, Graphing in the Desert by Jennifer Rozines Toy and Gregory Roy.

It also has a nice selection of Desert animals and plants with good facts for further exploration.

From the inside back cover of the book: "Reinforces the ability to read and create graphs, stimulates critical thinking, and provides students with an understanding of math in the real world."

Non-Fiction Monday :: Dogs and Cats, and More!

 

Wow, is it Monday again already???  That must mean it's time for another Non-Fiction Monday pick!  My kids have really enjoyed this especially on Mondays, as it's always hard to gear back over from the weekend and get into school work again. 

This week we have some selections from my six year old son, Seamus.  He loves the non-fiction section of our library and is always drawn to it every time we visit.

Non-Fiction Monday :: The Four Seasons of Mary Azarian

 

Our pick for Non-Fiction Monday today is the beautiful Four Seasons of Mary Azarian by Lilias Macbean Hart.  We have enjoyed many of Mary Azarian's illustrations in picture books in the past and I was delighted to find this one at my library!

 

As you might imagine, the book is divided by the seasons and includes so much of Azarian's beautiful art, it is pure eye candy!

From Winter:

"Whoever divided the year into equal parts, like a pie at a church supper did not live in Vermont. There are really three seasons here - preparing for winter, winter, and recovering from winter..."

I have selected about three or four picture books to go along with our Illustrator study this week and I'll share about them later!

Non-Fiction Monday :: The Moon of the Deer

 

The Moon of the Deer by Jean Craighead George is a favorite of ours from her outstanding "Thirteen Moon Series".  Jean Craighead George is a staple in our non-fiction reading as well as all of her fiction picks with her engaging writing style about all things in the natural world.  Any of her books are a treat to discover!

Here is an excerpt:  "The groundsel trees cracked, and the magnificient head and antlers of the old buck were thrust into view.  They gleamed in the moonlight.  In seeming madness, the young buck lowered his head in challenge.  His little spikes shone like silver daggers..."

Non-Fiction Monday :: Young Mozart

  Young Mozart by Rachel Isadora is our first Non-Fiction Monday book! 

 For ages K-4th grade!

Here is an excerpt from the School Library Journal:  "Isadora's soft-edged watercolors are a perfect fit for this story of the boy prodigy; they capture the elegant detail of the rococo period in central Europe while emphasizing the emotion of romanticism.
